El Tiempo
The newspaper El Tiempo is Colombia's most widely read national newspaper. It is owned by the richest man in the country, the businessman Luis Carlos Sarmiento Angulo. For seven years (2001-2008) El Tiempo was the only newspaper in national circulation. Its content is general and it must be purchased. Initially it had a liberal orientation. However, the economic interests of its successive proprietors have influenced in its editorial position.
It is headquartered in Bogotá D.C. The newspaper is the cornerstone of the El Tiempo CEET S.A publishing house and media group. Its direct competition, the El Espectador newspaper, was forced to become a weekly newspaper due to a budget crisis. The publishing house was historically associated with the Santos family, one of the most important of the Colombian political elite, to which the current president of Colombia Juan Manuel Santos belongs.
