Juanita León Garcia

She is a lawyer. Her working life as a journalist has taken place in several national and international media. She was editor-in-chief of Semana.com, editor of the Unidad de Paz of El Tiempo and editor of the Revista Semana; she was reporter of the Wall Street Journal Americas. Juanita is also a writer. Among her most relevant books are: País de Plomo. Crónicas de guerra (2005); and No somos machos pero somos muchos. Cinco crónicas de resistencia civil en Colombia (2004.
Since 2015, Juanita León is the president of the Fundación para Libertad de Prensa, FLIP. Her journalistic work has earned her several awards. In 2012 she was a finalist for the Cemex Journalism Award of the Foundation for a New Ibero-American Journalism. In 2011 the Fundación Liderazgo y Democracia and the Revista Semana categorized her as one of the leaders of the year. In 2006, she was awarded with the third place in the Lettre Ulysses Award for the art of reportage, for the book “País de Plomo. Crónicas de guerra”.
Juanita is the founder of La Silla Vacía. Information Website focused on aspects of the national politics, which was officially launched on March 2009, thanks to a grant from the Open Society Institut. La Silla Vacía is the third most visited media by opinion leaders in the country, according to the Opinion Panel of Figures and Concepts.
La Silla has been recognized for its investigative journalism projects. In 2013 she won the Gabriel García Márquez journalism award for the Rose Project, which seek to make visible the struggle of the leaders of the movements of victims of the conflict. In addition, the media has published some books with investigations, reports and newspaper reports, among which it can be highlighted: De vidas se hizo el conflicto (2015), and Los Superpoderosos (2014).
