Based on factors of market power and influence on public opinion – identified by high audiences shares - MOM has chosen 10 media groups in the TV, radio, press and digital sectors to expose their business structures.
Grupo Aval is among the most influential conglomerates. It controls the El Tiempo publishing house and reaches 40% of readers of the Colombian press. The group belongs to Colombia’s richest man, Luis Carlos Sarmiento Angulo. The Ardila Lülle Organization controls 60% of the television market and 20% of radio. A further 24% of the radio market is controlled the Radial Olímpica Organization, owned by the Char brothers. Through Valorem S.A. the Santo Domingo family dominates the television sector, with 72% of the audience concentrated in Caracol TV. The Spanish Prisa group, an international company, owns radio channels through Caracol Primera Cadena Radial.
